Falcons go close to upset victory

30.04.2007

A BARE bones Sunshine Coast Falcons squad came within a few minutes of scoring the upset of the FOGs Cup season at Quad Park yesterday.

Second last on the ladder, and with just 14 fit senior players available for selection against the joint competition leader, the Falcons managed to build a 20-4 lead, and then were in front 26-20 in the final minutes, before finishing with a 26-all draw.

Even though a great chance for only their second win of the year had disappeared, coach Des Allen said the draw had restored pride in his Falcons after they suffered a 52-point loss to Wynnum-Manly the previous week.

It also showed that the colts players who were asked to back up in A-grade were capable of being competitive.

"I’m just thrilled to see those young blokes do so well and I know there’s other guys in the colts side who can do this," Allen said.

The Falcons’ best patch of form came in the middle stages of the first half when they produced three tries to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 16-point lead.

Ipswich centre Brendon Marshall hauled his side back into contention with tries either side of halftime and then completed his hat-trick to bring the scores level with four minutes remaining.

"This was a big turnaround (on last week). We probably should have won that game today," Allen said.
