Falcons let early lead slip away

IT’S easy to pinpoint the Sunshine Coast Falcons’ best period in last night’s FOGs Cup match against Redcliffe at Quad Park.

It was the first 15 minutes, when they sped off to a 12-0 lead.

After then, it was Redcliffe 40 to the Falcons’ four to produce another night of disappointment for the Coast, which remains in second last on the ladder.

Dolphins coach Grant Cleal thought his seventh-placed side was in big trouble when the Falcons made one of their best starts to a game for the season.

Danny McMah finished off a fine move, which included a long break down the sideline followed by a kick ahead by centre Mark Page, to open the scoring and the second try wasn’t long in coming with Chris Chaisty on hand to clean up a spilt Clint Broomham bomb.

Unfortunately for the Falcons, their early lead had disappeared by halftime as the Dolphins took control with three tries of their own.

A solo effort from lock Matt Keating brought the home side level at 16-all early in the second half and that was where the good times ended for the Falcons.

With the Coast making too many errors in its own half, Redcliffe raced in four tries, including a double to five-eighth Michael Wilson.

There may yet be some more joy for the Falcons this season and it could come as early as next weekend.

Their next assignment is against Aspley, a side just one point better off and coming off a 64-6 flogging against Ipswich yesterday.
