BULLDOGS TEAM WITH FALCONS!
Beerwah shows true league spirit
Posted 24th May 2007

Just days after Caloundra RSL Falcons CEO Brett Winkler launched his blueprint for the future of Rugby League on the Sunshine Coast, local league club Beerwah have responded to the call to support the fledgling

FOGS and future Queensland Cup Rugby League entity by providing players in both the A Grade and Colts teams for this week’s clash against the Broncos feeder club, the Aspley Devils. It is a timely boost as injuries and unavailability has hit the Falcons across the club.

“The blueprint was essentially showing clubs that over a few years we will have an abundance of players coming to the Sunshine Coast to play for the Falcons. Like any professional club you need to sign large squads to have sufficient player depth that will ensure your viability and success. With that, not every player will be able to line up for the Falcons each week, so to keep match fitness and have them playing Rugby League they will be ‘loaned’ back to the local league clubs in the interim,” advised Winkler.

“It is a give and take scenario as we take time to secure our player depth which will build dramatically in the next 18 months. But in the meantime we need assistance from local clubs to keep us competitive. The payback will come as our player stocks increase and the ‘flow down’ effect kicks in and local clubs are strengthened with ‘loaned’ Falcon players,” added Winkler.

The Beerwah club with a long and proud heritage has had a hard year so far in 2007 across all grades. Numbers and injuries have made it tough on the Bulldogs to rally numbers but their true fighting spirit is clearly evident.

“We saw Des on the TV Monday and realised that he needed a hand and we had to help out. The future of the Falcons in FOGS, and eventually Q Cup is essential for the area and players of the future. If we don’t make this opportunity work then it will be to the detriment of everyone including the local league,” declared Beerwah President Brent Duncombe.

The Caloundra RSL Falcons’ CEO was buoyed by the offer of assistance by the Beerwah Bulldogs.

“This sort of action by Beerwah is what will make this whole concept work,” stated Winkler. “They (Beerwah) have been willing to give us players in both A Grade and Colts (Under 19’s). As in life, it is generally those with the least to give who give the most. Beerwah will certainly be repaid on this one.”

The plan was well received by most clubs on Monday night with the view of working to the greater good of Rugby League on the Sunshine Coast. The Falcons will continue to work from their base at Quad Park in a long term plan as the complex evolves to offer more to local players. Currently players have access to a fully equipped gymnasium, swimming pool, over 13 fields, over 10 training and coaching staff, a high quality playing surface and the soon to be stadium.

“We are committed 100% to working with the local clubs and to ensure the best opportunity for our senior and junior players to build a career whilst living and playing on the Sunshine Coast. Times have changed certainly but we must embrace this opportunity now,” finished Winkler.

Beerwah have provided the following players to train with the Falcons tonight at the Quad Park complex from 6.30pm;

A Grade – Jeffrey Bickford, Wade Rothery, Brent Brody

Colts – Kurt Nady, Jacob Formby
