THE BIG BOYS KICK OFF
Posted 14th March 2007

This weekend sees the first round of games in the 2007 FOGS Cup for the Caloundra RSL Sunshine Coast Falcons up against Souths Logan at Brandon Park, Acacia in Brisbane.

The FOGS Cup is the best of South East Queensland A grade and Colts teams in the greater Brisbane area and is the feeder to the elite level Queensland Cup. The competition is sponsored by the Former Origin Greats of Queensland who have added their financial backing behind the competition which is crucial to the development and growth of Rugby League in Queensland.

“Presently this is the highest level of Rugby League available on the Sunshine Coast for players and within 3-5 years we will have a team in the Q Cup,’ declared Chairman Peter Boyce. “This is a great opportunity for local players, coaches and supporters to become part of a new tradition.”

After their inaugural season in the FOGS Cup where they narrowly missed the semi finals, the Falcons have taken on a newly revamped outfit. The Falcons have had a good influx of local players plus players from Sydney and Brisbane to further strengthen their quest for a 2007 semi final berth.

“Make no bones about it we have our sights firmly set on the semi finals. And this week against South we expect every chance of coming away with a win. Our preparation has been good and we need to stay positive. A victory is well within our reach if we deliver on our potential,” stated A grade coach Des Allen.

And the ‘quinella’ is also on the horizon for the Falcons with Colts coach Brad Henderson confident of a great showing.

“Our depth will be tested later in the year with the inevitability of injuries but with what we have on the paddock this week we’ll have a great chance. The Souths guys are the feeder club for the Raiders so we are very switched on and tuned to the task ahead. I think it will bring the best out in our guys,” added Henderson.

With the advent of the FOGS Cup now being available ‘week in, week out’ to players on the Sunshine Coast, the impetus is now to assemble the best players possible for the Sunshine Coast Falcons. As more players flow into the area knowing that they opportunity to play elite levels of Rugby League, while also enjoying the lifestyle benefits, then the Sunshine Coast has a real chance at being a power in Queensland Rugby League if all the best players possible were available for the Falcons..

“We are working very closely with local league clubs through their CEO Billy Moore to ensure that this is a win/win situation for the code itself, the players and the local clubs. We need to be in a healthy situation where players are striving to play at the best possible level each week which will then ensure a very healthy local competition,” stated Chairman Peter Boyce.

“An area the size and potential of the Sunshine Coast should be enjoying a dynasty of success at the highest level, sooner rather than later.”
