TOUGH BAPTISM AGAINST PREMIERS
Falcons pay for errors
Posted 26th March 2007

Burleigh Bears showed on Saturday night just why they are the FOGS Cup reigning premiers downing a fired up Caloundra RSL Falcons 22 – 4 at Quad Park.

The opening 10 minutes of play showed Burleigh that the Falcons would be no easy beats on home soil with some heavy defence. The smaller Falcons pack were not afraid to ‘rip in’ against the much larger opposition pack but in the end too many errors proved costly for the home team.

“There is no lack of enthusiasm or tenacity in this side,” stated A Grade coach Des Allen. “It is just going to take a little longer for us to play our best football. We just need to address all the fundamentals of the game.”

The Caloundra RSL Falcons were still right in the game at half time trailing the Bears 14 – 4. Captain Clint Broomham was sin binned in a very questionable decision along with a Burleigh player on the stroke of half time which left both sides resume after the break with 12 players. However when the Falcons did put themselves in attacking positions they managed to make errors and not sustain any prolonged pressure on Burleigh. But Allen was still very upbeat and positive about the Falcons form.

“I am sure we will learn from our mistakes and improve on where we are at the moment. We’ll keep our heads up and work hard for what we want to achieve,” added Allen.

In the earlier Colts game, the Caloundra RSL Falcons were narrowly defeated 16 -12 despite a fast finishing effort by them to snatch victory. Again the Colts made too many errors particularly in the first half where they could not cross the Burleigh line despite plenty of good field position.

“So many errors at this level can’t happen and the players need to take responsibility for their mistakes and the security of the football,” stated coach Brad Henderson.

But again the Colts showed plenty of promise that they will be very much in the hunt later in the season as they gel together. Also the addition of new players will bolster their strength as well.

This week the Caloundra RSL Falcons travel to Langlands Park to play Easts in what will be a crucial game to keep up the early pace on the points ladder.
